Czechia captain Ladislav Krejčí has suffered a calf injury, throwing his participation in the key Nations League fixtures into doubt. The news comes just before new head coach Santi Denia's first squad gathering, with matches against Croatia, England and Spain on the horizon.
Krejčí, who led the national team at the summer World Cup, last played for Wolverhampton Wanderers in Wednesday's League Cup match against Everton. He featured only in the first half and was absent entirely from the squad for the weekend's Black Country derby against West Bromwich Albion. The exact extent of the injury is unknown, leaving his recovery timeline unclear.
This is a significant setback for coach Denia. Games against England and Spain will follow. Krejčí is a key defensive figure, valued for his left-footed distribution, ability to carry the ball under pressure, and his organisational skills. His potential absence could disrupt the team's build-up play from the back.
Uncertainty Over the Armband
Denia, who took over after the unsuccessful World Cup campaign, has not confirmed that Krejčí will automatically retain the captaincy. "He wants to discuss the question of the armband together with the players and the staff team," the Spanish coach said. However, he also praised Krejčí, calling him "a footballer who has the necessary qualities for a leadership role."
Krejčí's name remains in the original squad list for now. The Football Association of the Czech Republic has not confirmed he will miss the gathering. Denia has already had to deal with the withdrawals of David Zima and Denis Višinský due to health issues, calling up Tomáš Kričfaluši from Norwich City and Alexander Šubert from Viktoria Plzeň as replacements.
Tough Start for the New Boss
Denia faces a challenging situation from the outset. Their last result was a heavy 3-0 defeat to Mexico. Their overall form from the last five matches reads two wins, one draw and two losses.
Against attacking powerhouses like England's Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham or Spain's Lamine Yamal, Krejčí's experience and defensive stability would be invaluable. Coach Denia, who gave opportunities to Lukáš Ambros, Roman Mack and Matěj Radosta in his first squad, may now have to find a quick alternative.
Czechia's next match is scheduled for Saturday against Croatia. This fixture will reveal how the team copes without their defensive leader in the first major test of the new era.
