What happened?

Mauro became the first Czech to sign for an Argentine Primera División club in July 2025. His journey began with a side pushing for a top-half finish in the league table. Since then he has made 12 competitive appearances and found the net three times - all at home. “The league here is brutal, but I’ve learned to play differently. The pressure never lets up, but I love it,” Mauro told iDNES.

Mauro’s move to Argentina wasn’t just a personal adventure. It proved that Czech players can break through even in tough conditions. With the Czech national team stuck on just one point from three games (0 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses) and languishing fourth in their group, his story is one of inspiration. Mauro’s South American experience could even help the Czech team. “The game here is physically harder, tactically sharper. When I step back into the international fold, I’ll have more tools to handle it,” said the former striker, who pulled on the Czech shirt ten times.

The Argentine season is winding down and Mauro has the summer free. His next step could be a move back to Europe, where he could bring his South American know-how. “My goal is to keep playing at the highest level. Whether that’s here or elsewhere, we’ll see,” he said with a grin.
